| Back to Back for Rich Williams |
JacksonBlazer writes, "Wins Father’s Day Classic at Tecumseh Country Club
“I’m getting an idea how Tiger Woods feels”, said Rich Williams, jokingly after his 2-shot victory Saturday June 7 at the beautiful Tecumseh Country Club. “ The PGA field spends its time chasing after Woods tournament after tournament, and I’m trying to establish that precedent here on the Michigan Masters Golf Tour.” Williams, with his 5th career MMGT win, finished with an 81, two shots over the defending 2007 Father’s Day champion Larry Green, and 2 strokes better Shanear Trice. The 60-year-old private Tecumseh Country Club Golf Course, presented itself in grand fashion and was unfamiliar to all the golfers. 6632 yards from the blue tees, the course was characterized by fast greens and dog legs. “ I hit the driver just one time”, said Williams. “You have to be smart on courses such as this, and one of my best assets is out smarting my opponents.” “ This was a great track to play”, said Shanear Trice, who finished second. “It was in great condition with excellent greens. I hope the tour can schedule this course again.”
2008 Master’s champion Marcus Patterson finished in 4th place with an 85, and Freddie Young, the best MMGT player without a victory, finished in 5th place with an 87. “I was on Richie’s (Williams) heels”, said Young. “I was down six shots and got within one, but just could not get it done. My game is right there and I should be shooting in the mid-70’s. Let it be known that Rich is going down.”
William Patterson cracked the top ten for the first time this year with an impressive 88, 7-shots off the lead. The always steady Aaron Harvey also finished with an 88. “My time is coming”, said Harvey. “I believe I’m good enough to win. I drive the ball good but mistakes around the green always cost me.”
Next stop for MMGT will be the Ryder Cup match against Grand Rapids on Sunday June 22 at Marywood Golf Course in Battle Creek. In 2007 each team won a match by one stroke
